Treasure Hunts - the addictive brain game

When when is the next treasure hunt? Just like the addiction to running, my addiction to treasure hunt had peaked at the end of the year, and then, eh? When is the next treasure hunt?

The treasure hunt bug bit us in end 2006/ towards the whole of 2007. The real sting which got our adrenaline pumped was definitely the highlight of the entire thing, to win the company treasure hunt. Albeit this was a bit of uncontested, I had a good time giving the prize to myself (almost). The feeling on the stage was interesting as I was going from 5th, 4th, 3rd, and finally 2nd, and we did not hear our name!!! Of course, dozens of people wonder why I take part in treasure hunts in the first place, and also with a really interesting bunch of people, my colleagues and to some cases, even my client members!

Firstly I have to say, I have the greatest respect for my colleagues and my client.

I am also mentally challenged by treasure hunts, no matter how tired the week has been or the challenges of the day, to look forward to a different kind of challenge on the weekend was very fascinating.

What was really interesting was also that there were ordinary folks and also well established folks who took to the same interest to the streets every week. It is also humbling to know what you do not know.

I am one who is optimistic. In every hunt, I know I could do better. I am not yet a veteran, but I am confident this year, my team can make the top 5.

As part of my analysis of the hunts I've participated in I thought about listing out what worked and what did not. That would be privately shared with my fellow hunters, but below really is just a couple of comments, and really it is just these hunts below I've participated in (maybe about 10 years ago, I did a couple of hunts, but I've laid of hunting for that long until end 2006)...

2006
Awam Hunt (Womens only) - I drove in this hunt, with 3 other gals. I was blissfully happy in the aircond car when they ran around. I also found myself to think better in the cool aircond car and spotted well from the car. We won something, maybe 8 position, can't remember.

Tiger Hunt Berjaya Times Square - Nasty walking and running around Berjaya times square hunt. Did not win anything, but discovered a new treasure hunt mate (the cap harimau washing detergent man).

Malaysian Mensa Hunt - We challenged ourselves here. TKM our driver's car window broke down in the beginning of the hunt making it a very hot hunt. We also did lousy on time. I think we were about 25 out of 35 consoled ourselves that the audience was too chim ... heheh...

2007
Company Treasure Hunt (Internal) (PD) - 1st 1st 1st, it was very fun, because established the team very last minute, just for fun. Young newcomer hunter hit my non-driving car at the parking lot!!!

Kiwanis Hunt (Melaka) - Biggest lesson of the year, was DQ'ed due to time. Felt disappointed, but met grandmaster CFS.

Multiple Sclerosis Hunt - Eh, what is multiple sclerosis? Did badly 15 of 22 but happy that we were on time after kiwanis...

Lexis Nexis KL Bar - Tough against lawyers.... I think I drove and we were at a 3 person car. Mistake to think 3 can think for 4. And I realise that I may perhaps contribute more on the thinking than driving.

Atmah Hunt (PD) - Eh, we did a right thing, we told ourselves we were novice, and got a novice 1st!!! But I never saw the prize... my fellow hunters ATE my share... :-)

Sun Motor Treasure Hunt - Wow, I love this hunt. The prizes were up to the 100s and the cars 250. Crazy... We got 45th position, and a lousy rice cooker. Just because of treasures ...

Franchise Walk Hunt - Can't believe we signed up for this. We got a newbie, CY, and walked and picture spotted ourselves to 10th position. I guess we still could have been better in the first half when we walked the wrong direction!

Old Georgians Association (OGA) Hunt (Seremban) - Kiasu-ness drove us to explore the neighbouring state, drove ourselves to a non-prize winning position, but mostly quite bad got lost and missed the treasure again. Had a ball of a funny time though...

Amazing I could remember all this... bring on the next hunt please...

Technology and Kids

Kids learn about technology so fast nowadays. My 6 month old niece who was featured in the last post, was absolutely fascinated by the simple camera phone. The technology consulting gadget savvy Aunty ie. me, took to simple tricks like trying to con a 6 month old baby with pictures of her sister, her father, her mother and even herself.

What was most fascinating was that the baby clutched onto the phone and loved her ownself and was absolutely trying to fathom how could another baby emerge on a device or how there are two versions of her mother or father.

So, I put the camera in the baby's hands, opened the lens, let her have a look at the phone picture of me, seeing she was able to be a bit curious, helped her pressed the button with her tiny fingers, and voila, you have a picture of aunty...

Innocence

The look of innocence, of my 6 month old niece whom I met for the first time last week.

Life, many many years ago, as a baby was just so simple and peaceful, sleep, eat, cry, seeing things, learning things, daddy, mummy ...

I wish I could move time backwards not because of regrets, but because of just envy for the bliss of innocence...

There are people who look back at photos and pictures of the past and feel, wow, this was what I was then, there are people who look back and wonder, wow, what has happened to these friends, and then there are those like me, I feel nostalgic.

If there was one project or assignment which has really been in my memory for my career, it would be the time we had spent in San Francisco, as a first leg of a project using a global asset for a local client. We were there for 6 months and our motley crew was a handful of american, canadians, and a handful of us malaysians, and a Frenchman, and a HK guy. That was 1997, 10 yeara ago. 10 years has passed very quickly.

I had a few encounters with this nostalgic 10 years encounter recently.

I met LH, my ex-supervisor who is back in the same company, she had left just about 9 years ago, just after the assignment where I was in a short sojourn in San Francisco. She looked older, though what did I expect, it has been almost 10 years. The old LH emerged, I could see she was still a very focussed, go-getter, though I did not know her too well then. And suddenly, here I was, at the same level of the organisation with her. And through 10 years, I've kept the same path with this company, and she has taken another, which brought her to Australia now currently back in employment with us. I was not sure to treat her as a supervisor which was the relationship we left off as, or as a friend, whom it never really had been or as a colleague, an equal. LH, I respected you a lot and will always respect you, you gave me the foundations of being a survivor in this organisation, many years back. And we had a blast in one of my most memorable assignments.

JR, whom I've been in contact with and had been for more than 10 years, shared also the same experiences we had in San Francisco, 10 years ago. Dear JR just got married to a lovely bubbly lass, and looks likely to be coming back to working closely with us again in the near future. JR, whom I've had the pleasure of knowing since he was part of the firm more than 10 years back, whom I've had the pleasure of many ski trips with then when we were all bored in San Francisco. Years has passed, and you have never changed, you have the passion to enjoy the best in life. Congratulations and all the best.

SL, after 10 years, and a few meet ups in between, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Beijing, you are back in lovely KL for our friend's wedding. Can you imagine, meeting up in 4 different countries, and if you throw in KL and SF, we'd have had met in 5 different locations, which is truly, a global connection. I admire your courage to do things differently and wish you all the best in your new job. You have indeed the individualistic and unique style which is admirable and also noteworthy. I am sure you will find what you want in everything that you do.

I can't help to be nostalgic. On my way out of the house, I actually accidentally stumbled upon a stack of old postcards, cards, photos from those old days in San Francisco. More than anything, I was there with you guys, and the others not on this list, SL, SR, JF,... 10 years and yet we remember those good old days... (When I have time, I'd post the photos here)




You know what they say, you are old when you ramble of things which has happened 10 years ago...

The Shoes are Back on!

It has thus far, been a reasonably healthy new year.

I've taken the "initiative" to laze off a bit on the second day back after new year's day, and went to the gym, at Fitness First menara maxis, for the first time since I signed up. The truth was, I've always imagined myself to be doing the menara maxis gym because it was nearby the KLCC Twin Towers where I occasionally am there almost 50% of the time. Moreover, I've actually met quite a few people who go to the gym and it is kind of like a home gym, I've double signed up California Fitness and Fitness First because I got a free year from Cal Fitness, but MidValley is a dreadful deadlock everytime anytime of the day.

So, just the second day after new year, I stopped by the gym at Menara Maxis, for a short workout, and a short run. These days, I'm tired even after 4km, which in the speed I run on treadmills is about 30mins. However, it is kind of interesting that as I pick up back the gym course, I could actually run faster on the treadmill without getting too tired.

The gym was also the place where I have decided to embark upon more strength training. I am hoping these will help me get back in shape and also fitness for the 20km GE race I signed up for. Was almost tempted for 30km, but in no way was I in shape..!!!

On Saturday, I did another round in the gym, thus on Sunday, my choice of Bukit Aman vs Bukit Tabur (Klang Gates ridge, a hike organised by some colleagues) was good - my Bukit Aman conquer of Double Hill never felt so good despite at least about 5km I did it on my own. However, there were many runners, so there was no fear for safety. I also counted many houses where there were security guards, so it felt safer and I would speed up when I was near them.

This Thursday, and coming Sunday, I'm looking for increasing the distance to 15km and 20km, so that I could have a good race on the 20th Jan.

My Beautiful Mind

Does it scare you sometimes when you see what the unconcious mind can do?

I used to have a mind which never stopped processing (hence the title of this blog), but now with age catching up, I am also finding other means to manage my "beautiful" mind. I doodle a lot when I am on the phone, or write short notes sometimes even I myself cannot understand. On Friday, after a 15 min conversation with a vendor which I was in a fairly good mood despite some disputes, I saw I had doodled on excel. Well, indeed I am no genius, but the symmetry of my doodling sometimes is pretty weird and scary.

The Freedom of Speech

No, this blog is not about politics or anything mildly related to freedom and rights. After a prolonged absence from blogging, the last thing I would want to try is to be political (especially when we are all monitored now ... :-) ).

I had been sick for almost 3 weeks +. During this period, the week before last, was my worst, I lost my voice for 5 days and could not speak at all. I cancelled one big client meeting after queuing for a slot to meet for one month. I decided, I am sure the client can wait -> this was the first time I thought about it this way - I guess the 3 weeks of cough mixture has retarded me slightly.

The weird thing about not being able to speak was that, initially, I kept trying and trying, and eventually I decided, the docter really means it when he said my larynx was inflamed. And then, the other problem was the phone. It would ring and I would stare at the number and not being able to pick up the phone, when I was perfectly ok otherwise, was a torture. Then I would SMS back the caller saying my reason for not picking up. Eventually, weekend came and I still could not talk. Guess what I did - I switched off the phone.

I guess, I need to learn, when not to talk. And that silence is sometimes both a punishment and also a learning experience. When I did not talk, I found it more peaceful, as there was no expectations for me to do so, meant that nothing was also asked from me!

The freedom of speech, means, sometimes, not speaking. I learnt it the hard way.

And, yes, I know, I speak like a workhaholic. Bring back the old MC.

Short stop at Amsterdam

I had been sick this week and last week for a week and half was away for training in Madrid, Spain. Along the way, I took the opportunity to stop by Amsterdam to visit one of my good friends - she is working at Philips in Netherlands.

I took advantage of the long weekend from Deepavali and spent a short 4 days with her at Amsterdam. The last time I have been there, it was on a tour, and it was probably at least 5 years ago. This time, it was a free and easy trip, as I had wanted to honor my promise to visit ML my friend this year.

One of the things we did was pretty different - we rode around Amsterdam for half a day on a bike - the only thing was that the bike I took was a tiny bike she owned - a "for fun only" bike she bought from China where her previous posting was. Whilst she rode around in a city bike with twice the circumference, I peddled furiously for 3-4 hours all round Amsterdam in the biting cold and freakish whether in this tiny wonder.

Still, it was a different way to see Amsterdam. And a pretty good overview tour with the DSLR as well (the backpack on my back).

Yes, this is the first time I took my DSLR on a training/side trip. Carrying the DSLR and notebook in a dual function bag I just bought - this was pretty cool, but it meant I could carry nothing more! I will still rethink to do this, the Sony camera was ok as well - when I post the link to the photos, you wont be able to tell the difference between both the cameras.

A summary of Amsterdam :

- Beautiful city, wonderful autumn countryside, freakish whether or I'm getting old and the cold gets to me

- Saw a 10km race in one of the towns when we went there, running in those beautiful countryside, I am sure it will increase my pace 2x, the coolness will help too

- Love the donuts - oliebollen, and the hangout places by the square - a lot of atmosphere in the city

- Nearly everyone owns a bike, they even go to work riding bike on a suit and take the bike into the office (foldable bike) - I was shocked ...

- Good spoken english, polite and very helpful if you ask

- Library was stunning (why was I in a library? heheh) - I guess when they do something, they do it extremely well

- Feels like a liveable city if not for the freakish whether, lots of different cultural exposure places to visit and hangout

Don't ask me why I always end up going places only during winter... I only decided to do this with about a week's notice since I managed to maintain the training schedule... but I'm glad I did this, as I had long not met up with my good friend and take a break at the same time despite the short stop.

The Terry Fox "Walk" 4 Nov 2007

For two years in a row, the Terry Fox Run has become the Terry Fox Walk. This inspiring event about Terry Fox a Canadian who battled cancer to run across Canada has been made into such a commercial event that the ever quiet Lake Gardens was swamped with people last Sunday for this annual run/walk where it is notoriously known that the entire expat community is present in one area in one day.

My initial intention of running before the run to practice for the Singapore Half Marathon did not turn out when I turned up late, just around 9am, with my precious camera in a tow. And when I saw the crowd of people "walking" up the hills of the starting point, I was not sure if I could run or walk or take photos as the crowd was just too much.

Eventually, I waited 10 minutes, saw a few colleagues bringing their children, one crazy young colleague who lugged along 3 cameras --- a Leica (I've only heard of this), a Nikon and another which I cannot even remember the name. Then I noticed the strategic positioning of the Lensa Malaysia members, all along the path - how did I notice? I ran the route with my camera!!! I practiced this run ahead and stop when I saw someone interesting, and the stop allowed me to rest for a few seconds as well, so it turned out well.

All in, a pretty eventful simple Sunday morning, good exercise, charitable cause, and even managed to see family members of my colleagues - a rare family day out.

A wish for Simplicity

Pretty touching to receive a small card from the project team, to wish me happy birthday.

Small gestures goes a long way. I was really touched. For each of you who were so kind to sign the card and to have made that extra effort to get a card for me, it makes me want to do more to help you in any way I can.

Marathon Training Comes Early

My colleague reminded us, we have 20 weeks to KLIM 2008 (KL International Marathon).

It is time to be bold and take the marathon challenge.

My target? Finish by 6hrs. My other target? Get 10 people from my company's running club to join. One goal is easier than the other. Guess which... :-)

Pay it Forward

Today, I was fortunate to be gifted an act of kindness. At almost 1045pm when I was heading home through the Jalan Damansara toll booth, I realised I had entered in the Plus gate with insufficient funds. The guard seated there had no idea to reset the gate and take my money and I was caught sweating it waving my hand whilst 3-4 cars started piling up behind me.

Guess what?

The car at the back of me, the driver got off the car, came to swipe the toll with her Plus card and told me to go ahead and ran back to her car. I was stumped and actually went ahead and drove on, quite surprised by this super kind $1 act!!! Instead of swearing at me, someone actually paid for me! (And I left without saying thank you or paying her, as she had ran back to her car).

Dear kind stranger, thank you. Even if virtually done. You made my day.

Living the Extreme Life

I'd like to think I live the extreme life.

When I was in school, I imagined living in an igloo and how boring it would be to spend the day in an ice white round dome. Then I thought about the interconnecting igloos and how I could crawl to other's igloos and then I watched TV and saw the eskimos cooking in an igloo, how can the smoke escape when all the igloos are connected, how to crawl out if you are fat... well it goes on...

In fact, the above is a true story. I did have those kind of abstract imagination when I was younger, as the blog goes, I'd like to think I am a processor able to see things in a movie-like fashion.

Similarly too, I've found that since I joined the corporate world many years ago, I've had fewer opportunities to really explore and live the extreme life.

I'd like to tell people I am the exception to the rule. This is my first job. There are ups and downs but spending at least 12 hours in a work-like environment everyday sometimes drains our creativity and mind.

Meeting people and learning things has enabled me to be fascinated with a different kind of extreme - the actions of an extreme leader - one who inspires but yet is individual.

Mizuno Wave Run

Yeah, I'm 3 for 3 for Mizuno Wave Run - this is the third run - 2005, 2006, 2007!!! Getting worse all the time... !

I am so incredibly unfit, but I am glad I did this - the double hills route was a pleasant walk for me :-)

Good job to SCH who did his maiden 10km and was ahead of me. I definitely know how to pace heheh...

The Prague Sinfonia Orchestra

The Prague Sinfonia Orchestra held a special Gala Benefit Concert on 8th September 2007 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center. I was invited there by WF, who convinced me to go as benefits were going to the Kiwanis Club charity fund.

I had anticipated a tough to stay awake boring performance, but it was a pleasant surprise that I was able to stay awake, shut my eyes, and be lulled by the beautiful unique sounds of the orchestra.

Two thumbs up for the performers, I was impressed and enjoyed the soft and light evening a lot. 12 hours on the road for treasure hunt and being lulled by orchestra music was a pleasant surprise for me.

I was glad to be entertained and also had a taste of "royalty" graced performances.

Lexis-Nexis Treasure Hunt 8 Sept 2007

This hunt was our first after the "small victory" at the Atmah Hunt (two posts below!), when we got a good boost of confidence for becoming the "best of the rest".

We were not quite prepared for this hunt in the very beginning. I would not say that we were not ready because we were the same, with a twist... this time, I was driving. About exactly a year back (in fact Sept 1st 2006 - very memorable), Toyota (this is how I refer my cars by) had an awful accident with myself in the driver's seat, exactly on the day I was promoted. My colleagues took it on me that it was time to change my car. I was just glad I escaped unscathed. After that, Toyota was never the same again, and even no internal engine parts were replaced, it just sounded horrible after that, and when I bought a new car in Jan 2007, I had not driven too much the Toyota (passed it onto Dad) until the day before this treasure hunt.

My fears were unfounded, as the handling of the car and the manual drive was easy for me to adjust to. It was like cycling, just get back into the groove.

The same was not to be said for our maiden threesome event for this hunt! WY, JS and myself took on this with enough gutso that we were convinced that we would not be far off, but when I saw the "creme de la creme" of names in the hunt briefing, I knew it was going to be tough going.

The hunt started off in Subang Mewah (where Timeout Solutions was), and circled there about 3-4 rounds - by the time I passed the breakfast shop almost 3-4 times, I was exasperated! I never caught onto the style of questions from Dominic, the CoC, and coupled with that I was driving, it was almost a 2 person affair for WY and JS, who each felt as though they were doing two person's task!

In conclusion, we ended up with 9o something points out of 145 and the last prize offered was for position 22nd at 106 points - so we walked away with no prizes but a sore ego! I did not feel too uninspired by this episode - I guess I am a real marathon runner, I felt it was a good lesson learnt on what did not work. But I guess my two fellow competitors felt a bit deflated from the non prize winning position.

In fact, I was up from 5am to 5pm for the hunt, and reached home at 5pm after fetching my fellow competitors back, and then only to head out again at 630pm for a concert, and the next day, ran 10km. Phew!

Though I did say I found this CoC difficult to adapt to, I am game to be challenged again! The only thing I did not like was that I felt they recycled questions - I was sure I had hunted through some of the questions (2-3 questions) before, despite our virginity in this sport - we only had taken part perhaps 5-6 hunts.

Come on, team, be motivated, we were 3 novice females (and with a manual car!!) !

Lessons learnt from this hunt :
1) Some people can think and drive at the same time. I cannot. I can look and drive, but cannot process what I see, as I prioritise the traffic, people and road ahead of the puzzle processing. Amazing capability, huh, the unconcious brain?
Lesson - Keep to the roles, I cannot drive.

2) If we really wanted to do with 3 person in the team, the roles has to be pretty interchangeable. We should've kept the navigator in the front, as writing down the answers did not help WY, it distracted her and reduced her looking time, whilst JS had to lean forward each time as navigator and she was the only one who solved treasure clues.
Lesson - Need to define clearly the double roles and adjust accordingly if 3 persons

3) Listen to the briefing on the day - we missed one clue because we did not hear the organiser's name.
Lesson - Be alert for briefing tips and also goody bag tips

4) Adjust and learn from each CoC's style, but do not be too cooked up by their approach. The free mind is able to adjust faster than a mind conditioned by rules.
Lesson - Prepare, but also be prepared to adapt

5) Enjoy and Stay Motivated
Lesson - This lesson we had learnt much earlier and this is why I never mind losing, I always enjoyed and is motivated by competition, you can always target to beat them later!

Bunga Raya Course @ Saujana GCC

I achieved another notable first today, I played a round of golf (note, I am still on leave ok...) at the Saujana Bunga Raya Course with my friend TAL.

The first time I've been to Saujana GCC was to view the Malaysian Open Golf tournament. I cannot remember when it was, maybe 2004 or 2005? I walked and followed Thongchai Jaidee on the Sunday final round, it was quite interesting to be a spectator of an open golf tournament.

This time, was the first time I've ever played at the Bunga Raya course at Saujana - they have 3 courses - Palm, Bunga Raya and championship Cobra course.

It was a refreshing experience because the course was pleasant, well maintained and the entire course was covered with greens and trees between holes which made it feel like a fresh lush forest - the smell of fresh greens and trees filled the air, and the relative slowness of pace refreshed me. The regulars were walking the course, and we took our time in casualness, even had a short 5 mins break between the two 9 holes and still ended up only taking about 3 hours 45 mins!

Green invigorates. This was the difference and this was why I did not like the urban jungle of singapore. It felt congested and lack of space for the individual in the urban concrete jungle, but just 15 mins from home, I could enjoy the greens of a lush course which was both challenging and relaxing.

I may seriously consider buying the membership if my golfing buddies does the same.

Atmah Treasure Hunt 2007 - Novice Champions

The sacrifice of not racing in Subang Jaya 10km was well worth it, we emerged first in novice category in the Atmah Treasure Hunt held on 25/26 Aug weekend. It was a hunt from KL to PD, organised by Pava - our first time to encounter the "anagram king"...!

Small victories goes a long way, though we were champions 1st of 6 cars in novice category, but when viewed in the broader scope of things, we can be proud of ourselves - best of the rest (in the open category, we would've been better than 7th position, and then after that there is the gap to the masters of a whopping 16 points).

The first prize was plane tickets for 4 worth RM10k, to India, with a tour package! The second prize was return tickets to Bangkok - both these were good sponsor prizes.

Overall the hunt was quite fun, we have each found our niche areas and a decent team, at least maintaining 3 of the team members all the time should get us decent positions in future, I think we're definitely more organised and structured - a long way from our first big treasure hunt together - Mensa Treasure hunt last year end of year.

The prize giving dinner session was also very fun, I had "wholesome" entertainment, and the quizzes held showed us that we were severely lacking in general knowledge!

Lesson learnt in this hunt :
1) - Be humble, there are always those better than you, otherwise it is no fun.
2) - Age and profession is not a barrier to general knowledge know-how, we still have a lot to learn
3) - It is always more fun when you laugh at your own mistakes!
